The Known World

The Continent and the Great Sea form the whole of the known World for the majority of the population. It is a haunted land of secrets, deception, and the gnawing fear of oblivion. In the Known World, there is no concept of the divine or an afterlife, and immortality is a legend, if not a myth, sought after by many, often at the expense of many more. The World bursts with magic, which is produced spontaneously by Natural creatures. Often, magic is passed through the ethereal otherworld known as the Spirit Layer, where it can gain exponential force before returning to the World, or the primordial, linked nodes known as Elemental Cores, where magic weakens the barrier between the World and raw elemental force. Magic in the world is shaped by form, which can be made deliberately or by chance, resulting in many organisms which have developed natural magical abilities. Subsequently, the World has ecologies that are a greater threats than enemy armies.

In the known World, natural, intelligent, humanoid life is rare, with humans and khitons forming the overwhelming majority. However, these two races also share the world with unnatural peoples such as the human-like ulari and burunjhu, living weapons, and some creatures from the Spirit Layer and Elemental Cores. There are also many varieties of intelligent beasts in the World, the Spirit Layer, and the Elemental Cores, and some rare few have even formed their own societies or joined those of the humanoids.
