Jalan: Mysteries of the Haunted World
The Conspiracy of Eternity
The Conspiracy was formed long before even the tensions that caused the Patron War, back when dragons and serpents actively ruled human and beast alike, as an order devoted to securing long life and, eventually, immortality for its members. Its founding membership, said to be largely comprised of dragons, serpents, or both, and known as the Eternals Waiting, are said to be tremendously wise, powerful, and insane. Keeping themselves and their followers out of the day-to-day affairs of the world at large, and eventually the Patron War and its aftermath, the founders eventually turned to magical stasis in their desperation to avoid death. They sleep for years, decades, even centuries at a time to prolong their lives while their followers work, grow old, train new recruits, and die, all-along researching a way to end the cycle of death if not for themselves, than at least for their slumbering masters.
Some time after the Patron War, the Eternals Waiting declared that their patience had run out, and the world’s many seekers of immortality were not working quickly enough. Rather than allow their extended lifespans to finally end, the Eternals Waiting have given the world – the whole world – an ultimatum; either the secret to immortality is found soon(when “soon” varies by the telling), or the Immortals Waiting will take their final moments to destroy all that lives. While many doubt that this is anything but blustering desperation, the Eternals Waiting have been around for thousands of years and have knowledge which has otherwise been lost since the Patron War, with unknown numbers of followers researching sciences mundane and magical, and there is no telling what powerful secrets they have uncovered while searching for their singular goal.
Today, the Conspiracy of Eternity’s membership can be found in most major cities, and in many hidden locations, and is composed not only of true devotees of the Eternals Waiting and seekers of immortality for its own sake, but also those fearful of the great ultimatum. Most governments tolerate the Conspiracy, so long as its actions do not break any laws or cause a disturbance, but others have banned them from their borders due to unsavory practices that many sects are known to carry out in their search for eternal life.
