Jalan: Mysteries of the Haunted World
Not content to meddle only in humanoid affairs, dragons long ago experimented with lesser magical beasts, training, breeding, and magically-altering them to favor intelligence, communication, cooperative social behavior, and the ability to manipulate tools. It is no longer known which creatures were altered, or how, but their experiments ultimately led ultimately led to the formation of what humans call the beast kingdoms. These “kingdoms” range in size from primitive tribe to sophisticated nation, and can be composed of one or many species of magical beast. Once ruled by the dragons themselves, these kingdoms have become largely autonomous since the end of the Patron War; most of their masters were destroyed in the conflict or driven into exile. Many beast kingdoms fought in the War on behalf of the dragons and met destruction alongside them; the survivors and their descendants often hold a grudge for one side or the other. Though not, on average, as technologically or socially-advanced as their humanoid peers, if only due to their short history and the rarity of thumbs in their midst, the beast kingdoms are rapidly catching up. Some of the most aggressive kingdoms are expanding and conquering, absorbing, enslaving, or destroying humanoid and beast communities alike with dreams of surpassing their creators or simply taking all they can.
